GOLD RIVER, CA - Three people were killed in a crash on the westbound side of Highway 50 near Folsom Boulevard at 12:41 a.m. Monday.

Officer Jim Young of California Highway Patrol said 41-year-old Christopher Rigsby of Redwood City may have entered Highway 50 near Sunrise Boulevard or Zinfandel Drive. Rigsby was driving in the wrong direction  when he hit a 2001 Pontiac Aztek heading westbound in the same lane at 60 mph.

The Aztek overturned in the collision and came to a rest on its roof.

According to Young, five people were in the Aztek, including the driver Gustavo Sandoval-Gonzalez, 31, of Sacramento, two women and two other men.

Sandoval-Gonzalez suffered pain in his hand and knees due to the collision. As of Monday afternoon, he was in critical condition at UC Davis Medical Center.

The two women, 52 and 56, were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. It was undetermined whether or not they were wearing seatbelts, said Young.

Pedro Cornejo, 59, of Sacramento, was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to Young.

Rigsby was trapped then extricated from the Honda by Sac Metro Fire and taken to UC Davis Medical Center with a broken elbow. Young said Rigsby was charged with felony DUI and that he showed "objective signs of intoxication".

The Honda suffered front end damage in the collision.

The victim's names were withheld pending notification of family. Their relationships with one another were also not released.
