Cal Fire warns of severe fire season

Cal Fire warns of severe fire season

AUBURN, Calif. - Cal Fire is warning of what may be a very long and very difficult fire season ahead.

"Over the next couple of months almost all of Northern California's gonna be at an above average potential for large and damaging wildfires," said Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant.

The state has already seen 950 fires, triple the number in an average year. And the state is in the grip of the worst drought in recorded history.

"A lot of the green hillsides up and down the state are really just masking the dead grass that's been sitting there all winter long," Berlant points out.

At the Cal Fire station in Auburn, seasonal firefighters have been in place since the end of January, nearly three months earlier than usual.

Assembly Passes Cooley’s Legislation to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse

On Wednesday, January 29, the Assembly passed on a bipartisan 76-0 vote, Assemblyman Ken Cooley’s legislation to prevent child sexual abuse. Assembly Bill 883 (AB 883) helps protect California’s children by creating a pilot program in up to three counties to specifically address child sexual abuse prevention.

Although the state aggressively prosecutes child sexual predators and requires mandated reporting for suspected abuse, there is a lack of focus on preventing the abuse before it occurs.

“Childhood sexual abuse is devastating to the victims and the victims’ family,” said Cooley. “Often, children who are sexually abused have physical and mental health issues long into their adult lives. By putting resources at the local level into community collaboration and prevention, we have the chance to make a difference in the lives of California’s children before they become victims to sexual abuse.”

Community shows support for homicide victim

SACRAMENTO- There was an outpouring of support Saturday for a Vietnamese woman police believe was killed as a result of domestic violence.

Friends identified the victim as 27-year-old Vy Nguyen. Her husband, 32-year-old Khiem Thuong Tran is currently in custody at Sacramento County Jail facing murder charges.

Vy leaves behind a 2-year-old son who's currently being cared for by her husband's parents.

Friends say Vy had no relatives in the U.S.

"Even though she's the only one in the US and she has no family here, we're all here for her," said friend Kaylee Ha. "I've known her since she first came from Vietnam. She's a loving person, nice to everybody. Always helping other people."
