Assemblyman Ken Cooley to Host Free Tax Preparation Assistance Workshop

Assemblyman Ken Cooley to Host Free Tax Preparation Assistance Workshop

On Saturday, February 15, Assemblyman Ken Cooley (D-Rancho Cordova) will be hosting a free tax preparation assistance workshop for people in the Citrus Heights area. Starting at 11:00 AM, the workshop will give local tax filers an opportunity to sit down with licensed accountants, talk about their tax liabilities, determine what tax deductions and credits they may be eligible for, and prepare to file their state and federal taxes.

“Each year, thousands of families forego important tax credits and deductions they are eligible for because they have never been given an opportunity to sit down with a tax professional,” said Assemblyman Ken Cooley. “With the help of volunteer accountants, people in Citrus Heights will be able to talk one-on-one with these professionals and hopefully save a few thousand dollars on their taxes.”

Increase in Flu Activity is Reported

Increase in Flu Activity is Reported

Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and state health officer, says while we are seeing an increase in flu activity in California it is not an unexpected increase, nor is it too late to get vaccinated against the flu.

"California is seeing an accelerated increase in flu activity over the past few weeks," said Dr. Chapman. "You can help prevent further spread of the flu by getting a flu shot."

While influenza activity varies from year to year and is unpredictable, California generally sees an increase in cases in late December or early January and it often peaks in February or March. According to CDPH surveillance indicators, influenza activity in California is beginning to show a steady increase and is now considered to be widespread. Currently, there are more hospitalizations at this point than expected, based on historical trends.
